Inside Seaside announces a film programme selected by Beata Kwiatkowska, journalist for Radio 357 and the Octopus Film Festival. Eight screenings, including those about Nick Cave’s band The Birthday Party, style and controversy icon Peaches, Anita Pallenberg, who was associated with The Rolling Stones for many years, and the band Cool Kids Of Death Before the festival, the Octopus Film Festival will show four music films at the Spektrum Cinema – one of which will feature Kuba Strzyczkowski as a voiceover.
The second edition of Inside Seaside is another opportunity to meet the most interesting cinema with musical and music-related themes. We invite you to a unique review co-created with Radio 357 and Octopus Film Festival.
On 9 and 10 November, in the cinema space, you will watch a programme selected by Radio 357 journalist Beata Kwiatkowska. During the two days of the festival, you will see films about Nick Cave’s band, The Birthday Party, about style icon and controversy Peaches, about Anita Pallenberg, who was associated with The Rolling Stones for many years, or the group C.K.O.D. In the zone, you will also be able to meet Anna Tatarska, who will host a meeting after one of the screenings. Guests will include: Piotr Szczepański – director of the film ‘Twenty Years Later. C.K.O.D.3′, Krzysztof Ostrowski – leader of the band “Cool Kids of Death”, Natasza Parzymies – director of the film “Moje Stare”, Novika and Daniel Wyszogrodzki – journalists of Radio 357 and Tomasz Organek – musician and singer.
– This will be a set of films to listen to. Not only will the audience get to know interesting and important musical stories, but through the films they will also get a dose of music that corresponds to the DNA of the Festival,’ says Beata Kwiatkowska. – ‘At the same time, we will present hitherto unknown stories in which music is an important background or a vital message, without which the films could not have been made. Our audiences are an important link to the film screenings, so after the screenings we invite them to talks with filmmakers, soundtrack authors, music journalists or observers of the world of culture.
The cinema corresponds with the radio reality, as the films will be experienced through headphones. This year’s novelty will be the screening of one of the films, ‘unearthly music’, with a live lector – the voice during this screening will be the irreplaceable Kuba Strzyczkowski.
The day before, on 8 November, as a warm-up before the festival, in a new point on the cultural and film map of Gdańsk – the Spektrum Cinema – we will see a selection of films, chosen by the Octopus Film Festival. This is a festival that for seven years has been presenting the most interesting films of genre cinema, breaking conventions and boldly building the programme, attracting crowds of fans to Gdańsk. Collaborating with Inside Seaside is a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild and look for the most offbeat musical films in the history of cinema.
– ‘This year we are very proud of the selection, because – next to the cult “Footloose” – we will present the audience with films that have never been shown in Polish cinemas before,’ explains Grzegorz Fortuna of the Octopus Film Festival. – ‘Xanadu’ or ‘Return of Captain Invincible’, is probably the only superhero musical about alcoholism in the history of cinema. This is joined by ‘Bad Channels’, also known as ‘Unearthly Music’, whose screening will be honoured by Kuba Strzyczkowski in a live voiceover. We do not promise that all of these films are masterpieces, but we are sure that the audience will not be bored by them.
Admission to the films at AmberExpo only for those with passes and tickets for Inside Seaside. Admission to films at Kino Spectrum: for those with passes (after advance booking) or after purchasing tickets for individual screenings.
Sales and bookings for the films will start on 17 October at 12 noon, via Eventim.

MORE ABOUT THE FILMS:
Twenty years later: C.K.O.D.3, dir. Piotr Szczepański (2023)
This is the third part of a unique project planned for a lifetime. Twenty-two years ago, Piotr Szczepański decided to make a film every ten years about a group of his friends who formed the punk rock band Cool Kids of Death. The first part of the series was the well-received documentary ‘Generacja C.K.O.D.’ from 2004. Twenty years since its formation and ten years since its dissolution, the band Cool Kids of Death, which has already gained cult status, is embarking on an anniversary tour.
My Old, by Natasha Parzymies (2023)
Zofia and Ania are two characterful senior citizens. The years of madness are behind them – or maybe not yet? They have not seen each other for half a century. One of them has Alzheimer’s disease. Each has gone their own way. Now they meet again and embark on a journey together like Thelma and Louise to shoulder their lives and dreams.
The Birthday Party: Rebellion in Heaven, directed by Ian White (2023)
Nick Cave and his band The Birthday Party are the protagonists of the cinematic documentary The Birthday Party: Rebellion in Heaven, hailed by the opinion-leading newspaper The Guardian as one of the best music documentaries of recent years. Directed by Ian White, this rock concert-like thrilling spectacle tells a story of overcoming obstacles, artistic genius and total dysfunction. The story of the rise, success and inevitable demise of The Birthday Party includes candid interviews with the musicians, excerpts from never-before-seen recordings, songs that have never been included on any album and a huge wealth of diverse output from the band members.
Peaches Teaches, directed by Philipp Fussenegger, Judy Landkammer (2023)
A cinematic record of the 2022 anniversary tour. The documentary seamlessly combines unique and never-before-released archive footage and dynamic shots of stage performances. The result is a record of Canadian artist Merrill Nisker’s life journey, during which she transformed into an internationally renowned artistic icon with the stage name Peaches.
On Fire. The story of Anita Pallenberg, directed by Svetlana Zill, Alexis Bloom (2023)
She was described as a rock n’ roll goddess, a voodoo priestess, an evil seductress. She was accused of trying to break up The Rolling Stones due to her affairs with three of the band members. Several Stones songs were inspired by her, she was even called the sixth Stones. She also appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine. Anita Pallenberg – a German model and actress – rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s with her turbulent biography. The film, in which Anita’s diaries are read by Scarlett Johansson, tells the story of her eccentric life, family and career.
Footloose, dir. by Herbert Ross (1984)
‘Footloose’ is not only a classic of 1980s youth cinema, but also a story about rebellion, freedom and the desire to express oneself – even if it meant… breaking the law. Underneath the guise of a story about dance is a tale of struggle against oppression and the desire for change. Kevin Bacon, in the role of Ren, gives a performance that has become emblematic of the 1980s generation, and the film’s music, including Kenny Loggins’ immortal hit, contributed to the birth of the decade’s music culture. ‘Footloose’ is a film that combines the energy of youthful rebellion with unforgettable choreography, becoming synonymous with the best of that era of entertainment cinema.
Xanadu, dir. by Robert Greenwald (1980)
According to many, the last musical of the classic era and the last megahit to stick to the old-fashioned genre formula was 1978’s Grease – starring Olivia Newton-John as the sweet and characterful British-Australian with the perfect voice and hair the colour of a summer beach. Two years after that success, Newton-John appeared on the set of ‘Xandau’: a disco-musical on roller skates with music by the Electric Light Orchestra and a cast consisting of Greek muses, Gene Kelly and animated fish drawn by the hand of Disney giant Don Bluth. The finished film was a financial flop and, as one of several legendarily bad titles of 1980, inspired the creation of the Golden Raspberries. The one for Worst Director was hard-earned in this case.
VHS HELL Live: Unearthly Music, directed by Ted Nicolaou (1992),
From the label of the legendary Charles Band, this wacky 1992 mix of science fiction, horror and comedy transports viewers to a small American town where the local radio station becomes the arena for a bizarre attack from outer space. The aliens use the radio waves to abduct female listeners and lock them in jars like exhibits in some macabre museum. The film balances pastiche and parody and is full of absurd scenes, explosive special effects and, of course, the rock hits that are a key part of the whole plot. The role of voiceover will be played by Kuba Strzyczkowski, who will read the dialogue to the film live.
The Return of Captain Invincible, by Philippe Mora (1983)
In the surreal, black-humoured 1983 film The Return of the Captain Invincible, we learn that sometimes even heroes need retirement… therapy. Philippe Mora’s film is a satirical blend of superhero cinema, musical and political comedy that was ahead of its time. The music, written by the legendary trio Richard O’Brien, Richard Hartley and Christopher Lee (who performs an unforgettable song about alcoholism!), gives the production an absurd, almost operatic feel. Its quirky charm and excellent, self-aware dialogue gave it a loyal fan base. Today it is considered a cult work – wacky, full of irony and excellent performances, especially by Christopher Lee, who steals every scene.
